Regulations

1. The John Goto Award Centro de Cultura Universidade Técnica do Porto competition is open to higher education students in visual arts (photography, video, cinema, digital arts, multimedia, design, fine arts), of any nationality, individual or in groups, whose works, properly submitted in the application, will be assessed by the selection jury regarding their feasibility.

2. Applications are submitted online via a dedicated form accessible on the competition website;

3. The elements to submit for the application are as follows:

• a) Detailed description of the exhibition or installation project, clearly and objectively outlining the concept, specific characteristics of the work, and full assembly plan; required materials and equipment for exhibition or installation (technical rider);
• b) Technical datasheet with full identification of the work (title, date, artist name(s), techniques used, dimensions, and descriptive summary/synopsis), as well as project images legally made available by the author(s) for publicity purposes – GDPR;
• c) Artistic CV/curriculum of all authors;
• d) Declaration of copyright;
• e) Digitized authorization documents from the authors of the respective proposed artistic projects;

1. Application submission takes place from 23 September 2026 to 31 January 2027.

2. Following the application period, the jury will analyze and select proposals and communicate its decision to applicants by email by 30 April 2027.

3. Exhibitions will take place, foreseeably, from 3 November to 20 December 2027.

4. Assembly and dismantling will be scheduled in accordance with the programming of Centro de Cultura Universidade Técnica do Porto and/or partner institutions with Universidade Técnica do Porto.

Exhibition/installation spaces for selected works belong to the universe of UTP and public or private institutions partnered with UTP.

1. The selection jury is composed of an eclectic panel of photographers, artists, curators, and community representatives to ensure a comprehensive and pluralistic appraisal of submitted proposals.

2. Evaluation criteria for applications are:

• a) Objectivity and feasibility of the proposed exhibition/installation project, in light of conditions;
• b) Technical and artistic quality of the works;
• c) Portfolio and curriculum.

1. Each selected application will receive €1,500 (one thousand five hundred euros), dedicated to supporting the production and execution of the artistic project's exhibition or installation.

2. The financial support covers expenses related to:

• a) Insurance;
• b) Artist travel and transport;
• c) Expenses with the production and exhibition/installation of the works.

3. Delivery of financial support corresponding to the John Goto Award Centro de Cultura Universidade Técnica do Porto will be made in two tranches of 50%. The first tranche will be delivered to selected applicants, after completing inherent administrative procedures, to support the pre-production phase of the exhibition or artistic installation, including shipping and return transport of works and their insurance, if applicable; the second tranche will be delivered during production of the exhibition or artistic installation and for successful completion of assembly.

4. If the first tranche amount is not sufficient to ensure fulfillment of financial commitments related to pre-production of the artistic exhibition or installation, an advance of part of the second tranche may be secured, upon presentation of an expression of interest for that advance accompanied by supporting document(s), such as quotes/estimates;

5. The jury reserves the right not to select applications if submissions do not meet adequate quality standards.

1. Centro de Cultura Universidade Técnica do Porto duties:

• a) Register documentation of works, publicize and promote them, following an appropriate strategy for maximum public impact;
• b) Production and post-production support: assembly and dismantling;
• c) Publicize the event nationally and internationally through institutional media outlets;
• d) Grant exhibition or installation spaces for selected artistic projects;
• e) Ensure security of facilities with all involved entities.

2. Artist / Author duties:

• a) Organize all specific materials and equipment for executing work on display;
• b) Assume responsibility for any damage or loss of works during transport, assembly, and dismantling;
• c) Deliver and collect works from exhibition venue according to event calendar mentioned in Article 2;
• d) Provide all necessary information for publicity of works (high-resolution photographs – RAW or TIFF format / size 20x30 cm, texts, and declaration of copyright);
• e) Participate in at least one presentation session of their work to the public.

1. Failure to comply with any provision of these regulations results in disqualification from the competition;

2. Unforeseen cases not covered by these regulations will be resolved by the competition jury.
